Making a noise against opencast coal

“The day was hot and very sunny at the bleak entrance of UK coal’s head office…”
It’s a good job someone is making some noise about the proposed new opencast mine in Derbyshire. We know from hanging around opencast mines in South Wales (we were just walking the dog, obviously…) what a blight they are on the landscape. (Check out Ffos-y-Fran for more info). And we also know that what gets dug up will get burnt - in CO2 belching dirty power plants like Aberthaw, near Swansea, or the proposed new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth.
That’s why it’s so great to see the folk at Leave it in the Ground making some noise in front of the HQ of UK Coal - the developers of an opencast at Lodge House in Derbyshire, which will see 1 million tonnes of coal extracted over the next 5 years in UK Coal get their way.

Some of the protestors, plus activist dog.
The protestors turned up, banged their drums and blew their pipes to show that new coal won’t be allowed to destroy the future for all of us. As the long, hot afternoon stretched on they handed out leaflets and got support from passing drivers, before decamping after a successful day’s work to a nearby pub.

UPDATE: Enjoy UK Coal’s particularly irritating website animation at http://www.ukcoalannualreport2007.co.uk/ Their website sure is blue. And annoying.
