The sisters are doing it for the climate

Bringing a touch of Victorian glamor to the battle against new coal in the UK it’s… the Suffragettes?

Suffragettes have started to turn up everywhere over the past month, cycling, confronting energy ministers, and generally flowing around in period costume. It’s all part of the build up to the exciting Climate Rush event happening on the 13th October outside the Houses of Parliament. 100 years ago, the suffragettes ‘rushed’ parliament to demand votes for women. Now, the climate suffragettes are demanding an end to airport expansion, a cross-party consensus on how serious climate science is, and significantly for us, for no new coal power stations to be built.

It’s the brainchild of some worried people who are working on the very sound principle that averting climate disaster is something forward-thinking social movements of the past would have thought was important.  They’ve adopted the motto of the original movement: “Deeds, not words.” And we’re down with that – given that the Government is stubbornly devoted to coal power in the face of overwhelming evidence and opposition from pretty much everyone else, from the WI to the Tories, that it would be a disaster, it seems it’s going to take more than good arguments to change energy planner’s minds.

They’ve got a load of good speakers – including Caroline Lucas, the new leader of the Green Party, and it’ll be good fun. So, whether you’re male or female, suited or in an attractive frock, get yourself along to the Climate Rush on the 18th. We’ll be there sporting some fine mutton-chop whiskers – come and say hello.

More from the Climate Rush website. Thanks Amelia for the tip.
