Climate protesters chained to conveyor belts at Aberthaw power station

Demonstration at most polluting power station in Wales

Thursday 3rd April, 2008: Protesters locked themselves to conveyer belts, blockaded the main entrance and occupied buildings at Aberthaw power station today in South Wales. Aberthaw is the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide in Wales.

Coal is the most polluting fossil fuel in existence and is responsible for about 30% of UK carbon dioxide emissions.”

One of the protesters said: “Coal is the black hole in UK climate policy – the Government calls itself a world-leader on climate change, but by approving new coal power stations and coal mines it is driving the world towards catastrophic climate change.

2008 will be a year of protest against coal. On Tuesday a separate group of protesters staged a demonstration at the Ffos-y-Fran opencast coal mine in Merthyr Tydfil, and in August the Camp for Climate Action will start at the site of the proposed Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

The majority have now left the site, where there were several arrests.

A spokesperson said: “While we might be technically breaking the law today, we are really trying to uphold it. The government is committed to emissions reductions and if we are to meet those targets we cannot go back into the coal age. Clean coal technology is 20 years away at least, and we don’t have time to waste in addressing climate change.

We need to phase out coal and replace it with renewable sources of energy. Numerous technical studies have shown it is possible to power the UK without fossil fuels.”

I hope this site is going to be constantly uptdated with all the protests this year and not redundant after this little stint… It’s fantastic. And as for the folks taking the direct action themselves, they are awesome!!! Let them be an inspiration to everyone - that normal people are getting out of their houses and offices and doing something real special. Viva La Green Revolution! Bring on optimism! Bring on hope for a green future!!! Bring on the end of the fossil fuels domination!! BRING IT ON!!!

great to see a surge in these actions. well done all. something special is happening here… ripples of change..??

brilliant site too. Often it seems - even on an international day of action - separate actions can seem just that: separate. A site like this ties them together with a much needed coherence, explaining clearly why individuals are taking DA to ensure a habitable planet for the future.

in solidarity

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING! Bring it on, the end of the coal era, the end of fossil fuel use, the beginning of a bright clean future powered by renewables.
Summer of discontent is here!
