What a Rush

“Deeds not words!” was the chant this week in front of the Houses of Parliament, as almost 1,000 climate change protesters tried to force their way in to the Palace of Westminster.
The slogan was borrowed from the Suffragettes, who rushed on on parliament exactly 100 years before to present their case of universal suffrage.
On Monday, the protesters re-enacted the dramatic protest for an equally important cause – solid climate change policy.
Proving once again that a broad range of people are ready to take action on climate change, speakers at the rally included Jo Greasley, vice-chairwoman of the Women’s Institute, journalist Rosie Boycott and Green MEP Caroline Lucas.
Lucas said there was “less than 99 months to seriously address climate change, but the government still plans to build new coal power stations.”
The government can find hundreds of billions to bail out the banks, Lucas said, but they are not prepared to pay to tackle climate change.
In keeping with the Suffragette theme, protesters included both men and women of all ages dressed in flowing Edwardian dresses handing out tea and home-made cakes.
Five protesters were arrested for breach of the peace, and one for breaking bail conditions.
Congratulations to the organisers, cake-makers and chanting hordes of dress-wearers – like the real Suffragettes, we won’t stop until we see dramatic policy change.
